First Release of Trophy Winning McLaren Vale Shiraz…and some new vintages

Nugan Estate is excited to release its first vintage of McLaren Vale Shiraz from Matthew Nugan’s vineyard in the McLaren Vale.  And what a first vintage!

2003 Nugan Estate McLaren Vale Shiraz RRP: $23.95. This opulent and juicy Shiraz has already collected the Trophy for Best Shiraz at the 2005 Hobart Wine Show and 3 Golds including the 2005 Sydney and Hobart Wines Shows. This is perhaps why Nugan Estate’s winemaker, Daren Owers, was finalist third year running for the 2006 Wine Society Young Winemaker of the Year Awards.

This classic yet elegant McLaren Vale Shiraz has an opulent bouquet of lifted sweet berries and violets combined with hints of earth and aniseed. On the palate, it displays juicy dark plums, mixed spice and black pepper with a long rewarding finish.

Also being released are:

2006 Nugan Estate King Valley Pinot Grigio RRP:$19.95. This is Nugan Estate’s second release of Pinot Grigio, the 2005 vintage selling out in 4 months. In our view, the 2006 is even better.

A delicate, cool climate style sourced from the family’s Frasca’s Lane Vineyard in Victoria’s King Valley. It is a true Pinot Grigio aperitif style (as opposed to Pinot Gris). Fresh lifted aromas of pear and apple with floral accents of jasmine and gardenia. Followed by a delicate palate of vibrant lemon, citrus and pear enhanced by mixed spice and clean persistent acids.

2004 Nugan Estate Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon RRP: $23.95. An excellent example of Coonawarra’s flagship variety having collected Gold at the 2006 Adelaide Wine Show. 

This ripe and opulent red wine has real fruit concentration and structure.  Fresh aromas of cassis and mint entwine seamlessly with earthy tones and mixed spice.  On the palate, ripe juicy berry flavours emerge together with hints of mint and fennel with integrated oak and velvety tannins.

2003 Nugan Estate Manuka Grove Durif RRP: $23.95. Last but by no means least is the Durif. A rich and robust red grape variety that revels in the warm and dry conditions of the family’s Manuka Grove Vineyard, and one which is close to the family’s heart. Michelle Nugan, the family’s matriarch, insisted against protests from the then winemaker that Nugan Estate produce a premium Durif as Morris Durif was her late husband’s favourite wine. And she was right to insist! The Durif has been an ongoing success, with this vintage already picking up 2 Golds at the 2006 MundusVINI Competition in Germany and the 2006 Sydney International Wine Competition.

Aromas of ripe blackberry, plum and cherry with hints of aniseed and all-spice on the nose. A full-bodied wine displaying soft chewy tannins and a youthful fine acid balance with a generous palate of dark cherry and plum with dusty chocolate, earth and spice.

Nugan Estate is a premium producer of fine wine and extra virgin olive oil based in Griffith, NSW.  It is part of the Nugan Group which was founded in 1940 as a fruit and vegetable packer and expanded in the 1970s into juice production – later becoming one of the largest exporters of niche juice products to Asia.  In 1993 Nugan Group further diversified its operations planting vineyards and selling fruit under contract.  From there, winemaking was a natural progression.
