2015 Riedel Winemaker of the Year
for Outstanding Achievement & Contribution to the Wine Industry
On Monday evening, 26 October 2015, Matthew Nugan's dedication and contribution to the Canadian wine industry was recognised with him being awarded the 2015 Riedel® Winemaker of the Year Award by the Cambridge Food & Wine Society. This award is presented annually to a person of distinction for outstanding achievement and contribution to the wine industry.
Previous recipients of the Award include: Robert Mondavi, U.S.A. (2005), Karl Kaiser and Donald Ziraldo, Canada (2006), Lamberto Marchesi de Frescobaldi, Italy (2007), Leon Beyer, France (2008), Joao Nicolau de Almedia, Portugal (2009), Franz Arndorfer, Austria (2010), Andrew Hendry, New Zealand (2011), Riccardo Tedeschi, Italy (2012) the Brew Master of Gekkeikan Horinsake, Japan (2013) and Miguel Torres, Spain (2014).
This is an outstanding accolade laying testament to Matthew's achievements in the international wine industry since the launch of Nugan Estate in 2001. Matthew's achievements include overseeing the launch of Nugan Estate in 2001 and incredible success in the international market growing to be Australia's 12th largest exporter of branded wine in just 8 years and Top 20 Australia Wine Brands in 6 years. In addition, Nugan Estate is consistently recognised in the James Halliday Wine Companion as a five star winery which is only awarded to 7.2% of Australian wineries being 'outstanding wineries capable of producing wines of very high quality'.
This success is a tribute to Matthew's dedication and loyalty to his customers. He travels six months per year to visit his customers around the world, visiting buyers but more importantly working the streets with sales representatives, visiting stores and doing tastings and wine dinners. He is the Aussie bloke, with a wicked grin and great sense of humour in RM William boots, who believes in wearing out the old boot leather visiting people and standing behind his brand, Nugan Estate, which he is so proud.
Matthew was very humbled by the award saying, "I was very honoured to receive this award and to be put in the same category as some of the industry greats such as Robert Mondavi and Lamberto Marchesi de Frescobaldi. I thank our whole team who are behind this award and our distributors in Canada, Peter Mielzynski Agencies (PMA). Our family are very proud of Nugan Estate. I think my father and grandfather, would be looking down and thinking we're doing a good job. They believed in loyalty, service and quality and we continue to hold those values today."
